Immediate opening for an Associate Director. Tax Compliance with a biotech company in Aliso Viejo, CA who possesses:      
        
  • Degree in Finance, Accounting or related
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience working in tax (property, sales/use, and income tax)
  • Manufacturing industry experience is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of ASC-740 
  • Working knowledge of Avalara

FULL DESCRIPTION:  The Associate Director, Tax Compliance will be responsible for managing and coordinating the company's tax function, with internal and external resources, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with strong analytical skills and a comprehensive understanding of tax laws and regulations. The successful candidate will work closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to optimize the company's tax position, minimize tax liabilities, and ensure tax reporting is complete, accurate, and filed on time. 
    
The selected candidate will be responsible for:    
  • Oversee U.S. multi-state sales and use tax compliance process to ensure tax is accurately collected or accrued and tax return filing/payment deadlines are me.
  • Understand product taxability, tax resale/ exemption certificate, and license rules by jurisdiction and provide tax guidance and training to internal stakeholders including operations and accounting teams.  Partner with 3rd party delivery partner (Avalara) and update rules in the tax engine to ensure tax is accurately collected.
  • Reconcile or review the reconciliation of transactions between Avalara and GL for sales and sales tax.  Ensure adjustments are recorded if needed.
  • Ensure annual state and local filings are made by the partner, CT corporation, complete or ensure completion of annual filings where the Company is required to submit
  • Provide guidance and support to internal stakeholders on indirect tax matters.
  • Manage sales & use tax-related inquiries and audits from tax jurisdictions.
  • Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess the impact on the company.
  • Ensure compliance with state and local sales and use tax regulations.
  • Manage with external partners the quarter-end and year-end tax accounting and reporting process in compliance with ASC 740.  Review tax provision work papers, analyze data related to book/tax differences, complete account analysis and reconciliations, roll-forward schedules, journal entries, and other schedules. 
  • Ensure DTA schedules are complete and accurate.
  • Execute processes in line with the required quarterly and annual SOX controls; interface with internal and external auditors as requested.
  • Conduct regular reviews and analyses of tax accounts and transactions. 
  • Prepare/review work papers for preparation of U.S. federal and state income tax and franchise tax returns by external tax accounting firms.  Review prepared returns and coordinate filing with the CFO.
  • File annual Delaware franchise tax returns and manage quarterly payments.
  • Monitor changes in U.S. accounting standards and U.S. and foreign tax laws to ensure income tax impact is properly considered.
  • Ensure the payroll service provider prepares, files, and pays all payroll taxes.  Ensure that all state/local jurisdictions are properly set up in the payroll system.
  • Coordinate and manage payroll tax audits.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
  • Monitor and implement changes in payroll tax laws and regulations. 
  • Review of informational tax reporting (1099, 1042, W2, 3921, 3922) to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timely filing.
  • Review property tax returns and ensure accurate and timely filing.  Prepare/coordinate CA or other property tax audit schedules as required by governmental agencies.
  • Oversee International (indirect) compliance and review monthly/quarterly returns for Germany and other European locales as required.
  • Oversee and ensure VAT and other international filings are correct and made promptly; oversee international accounting firm compliance
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
   
 The selected candidate will also possess:  
  • Strong computer skills: MS Office, Excel, Word, tax research software, and internet proficiency are required.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, local, and international tax laws and U.S. sales and use tax regulations.
  • Experience in public manufacturing companies or public accounting preferred
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret complex data and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage well through constant changes.
  • Flexibility and adaptability – the ability to deal with changing internal and external environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams including internal and external stakeholders.
  • Requires minimal supervision.
  • BA/BS Degree in Accounting, Tax and/or Finance/ CPA
  • A master's degree in Tax is highly preferred
  • 8+ years of relevant experience required
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivated, willing to "Roll-up their sleeves" to drive and deliver results and improve processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to budget, timelines, and critical deadlines; and take ownership and accountability.
  • Detail-oriented; strong organizational and project management skills, including follow-up and follow-through skills.
  • Strong analytical skills with shown ability to strategize solutions and solve problems.

  • Training to be completed per the training plan for this position as maintained in the document control system.
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S. without sponsorship preferred.

  • The training requirements on TRN-10007 Insider Trading Policy, TRN-10008 Global Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption Policy, and TRN-10009 Code of Business Conducts and Ethics must be diligently completed within 30 days from the hiring date and on an annual basis
 
Salary Range: $160k-$175k/yr
